Overview
The container (MP4, MKV, WebM, MOV) is the package holding video, audio, subtitles, and metadata. The codec (H.264, H.265, VP9, AAC, MP3) is how each track is compressed.
You can remux — change container without re-encoding — if codecs are compatible. Transcoding changes the codec and may reduce quality.
